Indian Motorcycle has officially entered a new chapter. The historic American brand has closed its acquisition agreement with Polaris and is now operating as a fully independent motorcycle company under the ownership of Carolwood LP.

The deal marks a significant turning point for Indian Motorcycle as it separates from Polaris and refocuses its strategy exclusively on motorcycles. The transition arrives at a symbolic moment – 2026 marks the company’s 125th Anniversary, underscoring both its heritage and its future ambitions.

Leading the next phase is newly appointed CEO Mike Kennedy, a seasoned motorcycle industry veteran tasked with guiding the iconic brand through its standalone evolution.

According to Kennedy, independence brings sharper clarity and renewed commitment. He emphasized that while 2026 will celebrate the brand’s deep-rooted history, the larger focus is driving Indian Motorcycle forward with a long-term strategy centered on performance, craftsmanship, and innovation. Operating as a standalone company allows Indian to invest more directly into the motorcycles, technology, and rider experiences that matter most to its global community.

The company’s leadership has made it clear that the future strategy revolves around differentiation—leaning heavily into what makes Indian Motorcycle unique in the American V-twin landscape. That includes refined performance, elevated craftsmanship, and a stronger emotional connection to the brand’s unmistakable character.

Indian Motorcycle’s global dealer network will remain a core pillar of its business model. Kennedy stated that dealer success will serve as a primary benchmark for the company’s overall performance.

The brand intends to strengthen collaboration with dealers through increased transparency, active feedback loops, and shared planning in product development, marketing initiatives, and operational improvements. The goal is to deliver what leadership describes as the “number one dealer experience” in the motorcycle industry.

Operationally, the acquisition transitions approximately 900 employees into the newly formed independent company. Manufacturing will continue in Spirit Lake, Iowa, and Monticello, Minnesota—maintaining Indian Motorcycle’s American production roots.

Meanwhile, industrial design, research, and product development efforts will remain active in Burgdorf, Switzerland, and Wyoming, Minnesota. Sales, service, and dealer support are expected to continue seamlessly under the new ownership structure.

Kennedy reinforced that American manufacturing will be central to the brand’s identity moving forward, positioning “Built in America” not as a marketing slogan, but as a strategic competitive advantage.

For riders and industry insiders alike, the acquisition signals potential acceleration. As an independent company, Indian Motorcycle now has the flexibility to define its own product roadmap, sharpen brand positioning, and pursue long-term innovation strategies without broader corporate constraints.
